Portable X-Ray Fluorescence Analysis

Over the last 30 years, portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) has become a key technique for field geochemical analyses, for both mining and environmental applications. pXRF provides real-time decision support for operational field decisions in the areas of exploration, mining, site remediation or waste management.

Course description

Although geochemistry or analytical chemistry skills are not a pre-requisite, a background knowledge of either is recommended.

The course has the following objectives and outcomes: During this course, participants will gain operational knowledge of pXRF measurement and interpretation for various application contexts.

Course content

Principles of pXRF measurement;
Hazards and protection from X-rays;
Sample preparation;
Operational measurement techniques in site conditions;
Qualitative and quantitative interpretation of analyses results;
Selected applications in geosciences and environment.

Type of training

The course is combining class room lectures, group work and excursions, including practical hands-on exercises and use of the pXRF on site.

Objectives and outcome

During this course, participants will gain operational knowledge of pXRF measurement and interpretation for various application contexts.
