How is your company prioritizing post COVID-19 strategies for the new normals? Participation in this course will help students to learn about and to apply holistic methodologies, circular economy concepts and B-corporation business models, that are essential for the sustainable transition to equitable and resilient supply chains in the context of challenges like climate changes, economic disruptions, pandemics and other crises.
This course is comprised of three blocks designed to teach concepts, processes and tools that will help students and their company colleagues to transform current or emerging companies, into socially conscious, sustainable businesses which, will function effectively and sustainably within circular economies in the context of company vulnerabilities due to climate changes, economic problems, pandemics and other challenges.
The course leaders will focus upon holistic approaches for designing and producing cleaner product-service combinations by using cleaner production, sustainable consumption and new business models, such as Certified B Corporations and Legal Benefit Corporations in post COVID-19 contexts. The students will learn why and how to plan and implement changes in their companies so they become more effective, efficient, resilient and sustainable.
The course leaders will provide a wide-array of materials and tools to help the students before, during and after the three-week course. There will be an on-line ‘course repository,’ that will serve as a ‘commons’ for sharing articles, videos and other types of relevant materials with and among the students.
The content of the course is divided into three blocks. The broad outlines are:
Expanding the understanding of roles of the value chain, from product design, product-service system implementation, production, processing, wholesaling, retailing and valorizing wastes to help to facilitate transition to equitable and resilient supply chains and sustainable societies.
Assignment: Corporate value stream mapping for any type of industrial sector.
Concepts of benefit corporations for facilitating transitions to sustainable and conscious businesses within sustainable circular economies in the post COVID-19 era.
Assignment: Students’ will discuss their findings and challenges they had as they performed the Corporate Value Stream Mapping in their company. Course leaders will provide useful guidance for follow-up work in the student’s company
Why and how cleaner production, sustainable consumption, industrial ecology and circular economy-based business models work. Case studies from the book, “100 Pioneers in Efficient Resource Management: Best practice cases from producing companies,” will be used to teach the concepts, tools, costs and benefits for companies and societies due to implementation of the holistic, preventative approaches implemented by the 100 pioneer companies.
Assignment: Six-months after the course, the students will have the opportunity to discuss with each other and with the course leaders, about the challenges, opportunities and benefits they experienced as they worked to implement changes in their companies.

This online course is a combination of e-learning, videos and self-study.
Objective and outcome
The course leaders will provide in-depth feedback to the students and to other members of their company via written responses and via the on-line tool. Students are invited to contact the course leaders for advice during the time between the end of the course and the six-month feedback report date.
Participants would require their own laptop and a stable high-speed internet connection to take part in this course.
Prof. Huisingh received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in June of 1965 and has continued to be a leading educator and consultant on environmental science, cleaner production and sustainable development in more than 80 countries since his first academic position at North Caroline State University from 1965 to 1987. Prof. Huisingh is the founder and was the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Cleaner Production from 1992 to 2015. He is the co-founder of The International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education and the Co-Editor-in-Chief of the new journal, “Big Data Mining For Global Warming. Prof. Huisingh, is an expert in developing, teaching and evaluating curricula for helping to accelerate societal transitions to sustainable, livable, equitable, post fossil-carbon societies. He builds upon system’s approaches to promote life cycle thinking, cleaner production, industrial ecology, eco-efficiency and conscious businesses for achieving sustainable circular economies. He is the author or co-author of more than 350 publications, including research papers, books and audio-visual productions. He was awarded Distinguished Public Service Award of the State Government of North Carolina in 1983, the Best Contribution Award for Pollution Prevention in the United States in 1988, was awarded the ‘Saipem International Professorship’ at Politechnico di Milano for the period, September 2017 to March 2018 and was appointed as Honorary Professor in the Unitelma Sapienza University in Rome in 2018.
Ashim received his B. Tech graduation from Nepal in Food Technology in 2015, an emerging leaders course from Harvard crossroads held in the United Arab Emirates in August 2017 and a professional diploma in cleaner production in the Netherlands from February to March 2018. He has spent nearly four years of his career in research and development department of a privately-owned group of food manufacturing companies and holds international register of certificated auditors (IRCA) for internal audit on ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 18001:2007. Recently, he was selected by the European institute of innovation and technology (EIT), Raw materials, research and development council, ‘TrainCall’ project for the training of the trainers in November 2019 in Finland and final meeting member of COST Action E1407, a project of Horizon-2020 of European Union in February 2019 in Italy. Now, he is aiming to catalyze private companies take on leading roles towards sustainable societies in partnership with EIT - ‘Knowledge and Innovation Communities’. Ashim is a global co-founder of the Holistic Purpose Group, an independent educational team across, USA, Italy and Nepal and a founder and chief of Holistic Purpose Group (Nepal) Private Limited.
Russ is a recognized leader in the global community of Certified B Corporations. He is the founder of Oliver Russell, a social impact branding firm, and co-founder of Humanista, a social purpose consulting firm that advises leaders on transformation to the new economy and also operates PlasticWorks, a mobile lab that upcycles plastics from the waste stream to demonstrate the circular economy model. He is the author of the Amazon business bestseller, Rise Up – How To Build A Socially Conscious Business, and is a contributing writer for Conscious Company Media, Real Leaders, and B The Change. Russ also advises social enterprise startups, including GoodPurpose in Turku, Finland; Business Impact Associates of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; evox Omnimedia, a public benefit corporation in San Francisco, California; Motive Ventures, of Santa Monica, California; and GoodWell in Boise, Idaho.
The online course will be held online on September 8th, 15th and 22nd from 2:00 PM-5:30 PM European Summer Time. There will be either a 30 minute break or two 15 minute breaks.
